What We Are Doing For Our Wounded
How we carry out our Mission
When WHF was conceived we had 2,000 wounded. We now have over 20,000 Wounded and Injury Deployed Heroes. Evacuated straight out of the field and separated from their unit, they loose their support base and even their possessions. The WHF provides immediate financial assistance to our Heroes and their families. Planes tickets, hotel rooms and other basic needs make certain they have their families with them during their long road to recovery. WHF has provided over 4,000 Survival Care Packages to Walter Reed, Brooke Army Medical Center, National Naval Medical Centers in Bethesda and San Diego and to the US medical units in Iraq, Afghanistan and Germany. We have met with over 1,000 Wounded Heroes and their families. With your help, we will continue sending Survival Care Packages, assisting with inpatient and outpatient care needs at all US Military Medical Facilities, both domestic and abroad and continue to provide life lines to these young men and women who are truly The Heart of America.
Saying Thank You
"R&R" plays an important role in getting the lives of the Heroes back to normal and provides a break from the hospital routine. We demonstrate that their fellow Americans care and support them in their recuperation both physically and emotionally. In June and November of 2005 we brought fifty seriously wounded service members from Iraq and Afghanistan to Chicago for a week of fun. A Bull's game, White Sox Game, fishing, golfing, motorcycle runs, lunches at a Chicago Fire House, Second City, Spa treatments and an Awards Dinner honoring ""Our Fallen, Our Wounded and Our Troops"" marked a week celebrating and honoring their service. The WHF has also organized meet and greets with celebrities such as Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, Gary Sinise, Dan Worley, Charlie Daniels and Neil McCoy for our Heroes. We've brought Wounded Heroes to Washington D.C. to share their story with leadership and tour the West Wing. We take great pride in having helped launch the Nashville song writing and singing career of a Wounded Marine. Whatever we can do to remind these men and women that we care and we're here for them, we will try to accomplish.
Where we are headed
Ensuring the American Dream for our Heroes is moving to an even greater level of involvement. WHF continues purchasing plane tickets for their Heroes and family members so that they can be together in time of need. We are assisting in the purchase of vehices with specific accomodations to assist our injury veterans. We have delivered over 1,000 care and welcome home packages this calendar year alone. WHF members have visited the wards of Walter Reed Medical Center and Brooke Army Medical Center. These members have done this their own expense and raised additional support for our Wounded Heroes and their families.
We are not alone
WHF works with other foundations that have provided over $150,000 in grants to our Wounded Heroes, as well as helping secure three parcels of land for the construction of homes for three severely Wounded Heroes in Illinois in 2007. We expect to break ground this spring and we are currently working on the house plans by gathering vendor support and completing the funding for these homes. We continue to gather support from additional organizations which will allow us to continue our work.
What you can do
Come to an event, donate whatever you feel compelled to donate, be it time or money, even simply shake the hand of a Hero and tell them "Thank You." Whatever you do, please join the WHF in this fight to secure the American Dream for our Wounded Heroes.
